Talking Design pt.1

The sustainable materials you'll find in your room

Throughout the interior, you'll find custom-made furniture crafted from recycled and bio-based materials or materials designed for circular use. We're highlighting some of these materials uses, all carefully selected with people and planet in mind.

At The Usual, our approach to interior design is driven by sustainability and circularity principles. Our Sustainable and Circular Program of Requirements informs every decision — ensuring durability, reusability, repairability, and waste reduction. By integrating sustainable materials and circular economy principles at every stage — from selection to end-of-life — we craft interiors that are timeless, functional, and environmentally responsible.

This concept has earned multiple design awards and reflects our collaboration with esteemed partners like Joi Design, responsible for our interior design, and The Good Floor, which created our floors and tabletops in the Creator Space from plastic waste.

Central to our design ethos is a unique biophilic approach that celebrates natural materials without compromising beauty or comfort. High-quality, sustainable resources are chosen to support environmental best practices, ensuring a minimal footprint and enduring appeal.

Woodchip innovation

Ceramics, contrary to what you might think, is not a renewable resource. Our toilets and washbasins by Woodio are made from a bio-innovative material from real wood chips with a minimal carbon footprint. In everyday use, this material works the same way as ceramics. The significant difference is the almost carbon-neutral production method of the material, which, as an environmentally friendly alternative, significantly reduces air pollution and CO2 emissions.

Cork flooring & walls

In our rooms, we have our floor and partly our walls covered in cork by Amorim, a great renewable material. Cork is a natural material with many environmental advantages. Besides being fully biodegradable and recyclable, the process of harvesting cork does not harm trees. Throughout its lifecycle, cork products absorb more CO2 than they release during production, making it a carbon-negative material and an amazing choice for use.

Modular tiles

Our bathrooms feature beautiful natural tiles from the company FMG. The slabs are made exclusively from natural minerals and clays containing no harmful substances, no solvents, or chemical additives. The materials are extracted and worked using sustainable methods with the production being ISO-certified for quality and environmental management.

Regenerated carpets

Our partner Tarkett provided us with beautiful carpet tiles made from regenerated nylon. And that's not the best part. At the end of their life, our carpets can be returned to the Tarkett production site, where it will be disassembled and turned into new carpets.

Every material in your room has been chosen with care — for how it looks, how it lasts, and what it gives back. Come and see the story for yourself at The Usual.
